Posti will deliver more letters and publications early in the morning with the newspaper of the day. This change concerning alternate-day delivery will go into effect on April 7 in Espoo, on May 5 in Jyväskylä and on June 2 in Helsinki, among other places.
Mikko Hoikkala, Vice President of Operations, Postal Services — what lead to this decision?
This is part of the change we all see. With the digilization of services, printed mail is being sent out out less and less. By developing and pacing our delivery, we can continue to offer these traditional services throughout Finland.
How big of a change is the reduction in the volumes of printed mail?
The volumes of printed mail are constantly decreasing. In the last decade, the volumes have decreased by around 70 percent. The state also has its own digital projects that significantly reduce the volume of printed mail. We are responding to the situation both with these changes in delivery methods as well as by developing our services in other ways. We are developing new services with companies that send letters and targeted marketing. OmaPosti’s digital mailbox is also a service that is becoming increasingly important in the everyday lives of Finns.

Alternate-day delivery is used in many regions. What does it mean?
In alternate-day delivery, we deliver so-called day mail in different postal code areas on an alternating day basis, every two or three days. If we reduce the delivery days of day mail, we will also supplement the delivery with early morning delivery. That way, the items will be delivered as agreed. Mail will continue to be delivered also in the future, so you don’t need to worry about that. Important letters and publications will find their way to you as agreed.
How does the change in delivery days affect the mail recipient?
The mail recipient will still receive their daily newspaper on time, for example. There may be some changes to the delivery times of some subscribed newspapers and magazines. Publications may be delivered on a different day of the week and at a different time of the day than before. Posti always agrees on the schedules with the publisher, who will inform their subscribers of any changes.
All in all, there will be very few visible changes for the recipient. On average, a person receives a letter delivered to their home only once a month.
It must be emphasized that these changes concern the delivery carried out by Posti. For example, publications and letters sent by companies are also delivered by 14 other delivery companies in Finland.
