Alternate-day delivery of day mail will start in several municipalities in September–October

9/1/2023

Posti will start the alternate-day delivery of day mail in several municipalities in September–October.

In alternate-day delivery, the delivery days of day mail alternate between postal code areas, which means that mail may be delivered on different days in neighboring districts. Printed mail is delivered on weekdays in alternating two-week periods: on Monday, Wednesday and Friday one week, and on Tuesday and Thursday the following week.

In the first week of alternate-day delivery, the delivery days in the postal code area can be either Monday, Wednesday and Friday or Tuesday and Thursday. The following week, the days are swapped.

Alternate-day delivery will start in the following municipalities and areas:

  • Sept 4 Seinäjoki

  • Sept 11 Rautavaara, Juuka, Nurmes and Koli

  • Oct 2 Pietarsaari, Pedersöre and parts of Luoto and Uusikaarlepyy

  • Oct 2 Rauma region postal code areas 26100–27340

  • Oct 2 Kainuu postal code areas 87100–89920

  • Oct 23 Southwest Lapland postal code areas 94100–95790

  • Oct 23 Järvenpää, Kerava, Mäntsälä, Pornainen, Pukkila and parts of Sipoo and Tuusula.

In alternate-day delivery, universal service items, i.e. stamped items, are delivered in accordance with the Postal Act. Alternate-day delivery does not apply to the delivery of parcels, with the exception of small parcels that fit in the mailbox or slot, which are delivered with day mail.

Magazines, addressed newspapers and advertisements delivered with day mail are delivered according to a schedule agreed with the senders. There may be some changes to the delivery times.

In addition to day mail, Posti delivers morning newspapers in early-morning delivery in many areas. In the future, other mail may also be delivered in early-morning delivery in some areas.

In Finland, alternate-day delivery is already in use in many areas. Similar delivery models are also used across the Nordic Region. The reason for this is the dramatic decrease in the volume of printed mail. By overhauling delivery, Posti can continue to offer traditional delivery services alongside digital services.

Route optimization also makes it possible to reduce the mileage, fuel costs and CO2 emissions of delivery. Posti is committed to achieving zero emissions by 2030.
