Starting in June, Posti will change its deliveries in Helsinki so that other mail will also be delivered in early-morning deliveries. This also applies to mail recipients who have not subscribed to a morning newspaper.
The changes, which will take place in June, will affect about half of Helsinki (see the areas at the end of the bulletin). In other areas, the change will take place in the fall.
“What is new here is that newspapers can be delivered even to those who haven’t received a newspaper in early-morning delivery. Deliverers usually deliver the early-morning mail between 3 a.m. and 6 a.m.,” says Jani Pilli, Posti’s Director responsible for early-morning delivery.
The changes in mail deliveries will help Posti adapt to the decrease in the amount of printed mail. As a result, each delivery round will have enough items to be delivered that the delivery of mail remains profitable. The volume of printed mail has fallen by 70% over the past 10 years and continues to decline. The same thing is happening all over the world. The change is a positive thing for the climate, although it will take some getting used to for mail recipients.
“Our deliverers always deliver mail as quietly as possible. We hope that even the lightest of sleepers will not be disturbed by the sound of the mail slot and that dogs will not be startled by the new sounds,” Jani Pilli says.
The morning newspaper and day mail have previously been delivered to two different locations in some of the single-family homes and row houses in Helsinki. In the future, the mail recipient will receive all mail in one mail slot or mailbox, i.e. the one into which the day mail has been delivered. This change will take place gradually in different areas.
In addition to early-morning delivery, mail will also still be delivered during the day. In Helsinki, day mail is delivered on alternate days, which means that mail is delivered on different days every other week. The delivery days are Monday, Wednesday and Friday one week, and Tuesday and Thursday the following week. Alternate-day delivery does not apply to parcel deliveries.
The change will apply to the following areas from June 12, 2023:
Vuosaari, Lauttasaari, Malmi, Puistola, Pihlajanmäki, Pukinmäki, Viikki, Toukola, Kontula, Mellunmäki, Jakomäki, Itäkeskus, Vartiokylä, Myllypuro, Vallila, Sörnäinen, Kallio, Hakaniemi, East Pasila, a small part of West Pasila, Herttoniemi, Kulosaari, Laajasalo, Roihuvuori, Puotila.
