The new stamps feature hobbies, glowing sunrises and national landscapes

  • Stamps

Posti will issue new stamp publications on Wednesday, 11 September. The stamps feature trendy hobbies, glowing sunrises and Finnish national landscapes.

"September's stamps showcase modern hobbies and admire the first rays of the morning sun. In addition, a second part of the popular National Landscapes roll of stamps series will be issued," says Tommi Kantola, Design Manager at Posti, who is responsible for the selection of artists for stamps and the guidance of artworks.

Hobbies change with the times

Leisure activities are relaxing, challenging and enjoyable. September's stamps, designed by Klaus Welp, showcase five newer hobbies that are growing in popularity. The themes of the stamps are disc golf, hiking in national parks, hobbyhorsing, wall climbing and postcrossing.

Klaus Welp’s favorite hobbies include playing drums, wood construction and hiking. "Every year, my brother and I aim to go for at least one hike, even a short one, to some national park in the south, for example. Repovesi National Park is one we have explored many times by walking and canoeing."

The sunrise makes the landscape glow

Jukka Risikko photographed the stamp designs that feature the first rays of morning sunlight. The stamps feature tussock cottongrass on the edge of a bog in Alajoki, Lapua, and a lakeside landscape in Orisberg, Isonkyrö. The graphic design of the stamps is by Stiina Hovi.

Sunlight plays an important role in Risikko’s photographs. "When the sun rises, the light is usually at its most beautiful because it’s not too bright yet. This brings out the colors and shapes of nature better than bright daylight. A familiar place can look particularly beautiful in fine light. In addition, sunlight is always different and weather conditions, such as fog, mist or clouds, add their own tone," says Risikko.

Seven new national landscapes in a roll of stamps

The second part of the popular National Landscapes roll of stamps series will be issued. The stamps designed by Stiina Hovi feature both natural landscapes and cityscapes. The themes of the stamps are Old Porvoo, Punkaharju, the Aura River Valley, Aavasaksa, Hailuoto, the Utsjoki Valley and the Vanajavesi Valley.

In Hovi’s opinion, national landscapes work particularly well in rolls of stamps. "Landscape photos open up to the user when they come out of the box, and a new landscape is always a joyful surprise. Everyone has their favorite landscape. I personally love many different landscapes, but I find the presence of some kind of water element particularly moving," says Hovi.
