Customs clearance of parcels and the handling fee

Customs clearance of parcels and the handling fee

All purchases from outside the EU must be cleared. Gifts, publications and documents must also be cleared, regardless of their value.

Clearance means that you inform Customs of the contents of the shipment and, if necessary, pay the VAT and customs duties.

Clear the item easily through OmaPosti

  • Item whose value is EUR 150 or less
  • The customs clearance can be done immediately after the item is on its way to Finland
  • You bought the goods yourself
  • The price of the service is only EUR 0.90

All items can be cleared on the tulli.fi website

  • The customs clearance can be done once the item has arrived in Finland
  • Please also pay Posti's handling fee of EUR 2.90
  • All items, regardless of value or content

If you receive a notification from Customs that you don’t have to pay tax for your item, you don’t have to pay Posti’s handling fee for it either. Posti receives this information from Finnish Customs, so you don’t need to inform Posti about it separately.

Gifts must also be cleared

All gifts sent from outside the EU must be cleared on the tulli.fi website once they arrive in the country, regardless of their value. However, the value of the gift affects whether the gift is subject to VAT:

  • If the gift’s value is EUR 45 or less, you don’t need to pay VAT or Posti’s handling fee.

  • If the value of the gift is more than EUR 45, you need to pay both the VAT and Posti's handling fee of EUR 2.90.

The VAT has already been paid for the IOSS item

IOSS item refers to an online purchase for which you’ve already paid the VAT at the time of purchase. If the online store provides us with the necessary customs clearance information electronically, you won’t need to clear the item as we’ll do it for you.

If the sending online store doesn’t provide us with the necessary information, we won’t be able to clear the item. In this case, you must inform Finnish Customs of the content of the item and its IOSS number once the item has arrived in the country. Posti will send you a notification once you can do this.

Don't forget to clear publications and documents

Customs clearance is required for all items sent from outside the EU for which a value has been marked. This also applies to publications, publication subscriptions and all documents for which a value has been provided at the time of sending the item. Read more about which items must be cleared on the website of Finnish Customs.

You can assign customs clearance to Posti

If you don’t want to clear your item yourself, you can assign the customs clearance to Posti. The customs clearance assignment is subject to a charge and must be submitted no later than two working days before the return date. Check the detailed prices and submit a customs clearance assignment.
