Shipments that remain undeclared due to customs regulations must be returned after 90 days – We are working closely with Customs to solve the situation

5/16/2025

News release has been updated on June 3, 2025.

We have previously communicated about delays in the customs clearance of shipments arriving in Finland by air from outside the EU. The delays are due to missing security data that the countries of origin and the airline are responsible for delivering. Security data regulation used in the European Union determines what information shipments need to contain when they arrive in Finland.

Shipments that can be cleared through customs without any issues continue to arrive in Finland. Returns apply only to shipments with incomplete security data.

We release shipments with incomplete security data for customs clearance daily, once we receive permission from Customs. We are addressing challenges related to missing data with high priority in cooperation with Customs, airlines, and countries of origin.

Some shipments are reaching the maximum storage time allowed by law

EU customs legislation sets time limits for the storage of undeclared items: if security data is incomplete, such goods may be stored for a maximum of 90 days. If the shipment cannot be cleared through customs within this time or does not meet customs requirements, it must be returned to the original sender.

Although we have extended storage time within the limits set by law, some shipments arriving in Finland by air from outside the EU have not received missing information within the 90-day limit stated in customs rules. The completion of missing data has been more difficult due to, for example, the stricter interpretation of EU customs regulations that came into effect at the beginning of February. Posti cannot release shipments with incomplete security data for customs clearance without permission from Customs.

Items with missing security data whose temporary storage time reaches the allowed maximum of 90 days must be returned to the sender.

If your item is returned, please contact the sender

The sender is the only party who can decide on reshipping or possibly replacing the item. Please contact the sender directly if you have any questions regarding your shipment.

We apologize for any inconvenience caused by the return. At Posti, we strive to ensure that shipments arriving in Finland from outside the EU are delivered as smoothly, quickly, and securely as possible. This is a shared goal among all parties involved.
