This fall’s new environment-themed stamps feature six tips for everyday green acts
On Wednesday, September 8, Posti will release four new stamp publications with a total of 21 different stamp designs. An important theme for the stamp illustrations is everyday green acts.
The stamps being issued present six simple tips for taking the environment into account in our everyday lives. “Finnish Nature Day is celebrated on August 28, and it’s great to be able to talk about Posti’s new environment-themed stamps in connection with it. The tips featured on the stamps have to do with plant-based eating, exercise, heating one’s home, recycling, water use and public transport,” says Posti’s Design Manager Tommi Kantola, who is responsible for Posti’s stamp production.
We want to draw attention to environmental matters also with the illustrations of the stamps. The fun look of the stamps, which resemble post-it notes, was done by Werklig’s Creative Director Anssi Kähärä, who created the themed texts on the stamps together with Sari Laine, an expert on Sitra’s Sustainable Everyday Life team.
“Together with Sari, we had a discussion on ‘another motive’ and, in addition to a green act that is good for the environment, we also included a personal angle that is good for us as people on each stamp. That is why the stamps don’t preach about giving up eating meat but instead encourage people to add more vegetables to their plate, which will help the global environment while lightening up how you feel and eat,” says Kähärä.
Sustainability and environmental matters are key in Posti’s operations. Posti’s emissions target, zero emissions by 2030, is in line with the 1.5 degree target of the Paris Agreement. “Talking about the environment is important, but every company and individual must, of course, also take concrete action. We launched our own environmental program in the late 1990s, and 10 years ago we were the first postal service in the world to achieve carbon neutrality through voluntary carbon offsetting. Now we are committed to achieving emission- free transport by the end of this decade,” says Noomi Jägerhorn, Posti’s Director of Sustainability.
The Everyday green acts stamp booklet contains six different domestic no-value indicator stamp designs.
Stamps have always been a good way to both cheer people up and highlight important issues. Posti has a long history of issuing environment-themed stamps. Examples of this include a stamp issued in 1974 reminding people about the importance of protecting the Baltic Sea and a stamp issued in 1979 featuring non-polluting urban transport.
