E-commerce in the Åland Islands

The Åland Islands are part of the European Union but outside the EU's taxation boundary. In particular, read our instructions for companies sending parcels, letters and transport units. The item's delivery speed will be slowed down if markings or forms are insufficient. For tax advice concerning commerce in the Åland Islands, please contact Finnish Customs or the tax authorities.

Documents needed in items sent to the Åland Islands

See below for documents needed in different mailing types. We recommend that you add the sender's tax number on the item. If there is no tax number on the item, the recipient must first declare the item in customs, in which case the item will be stopped at the customs in the Åland Islands.

Letter items containing goods (ordinary express letter, registered letter, cash on delivery letter, letter with advice of delivery, insured letter) In addition to the address label/Exprès label for the service in domestic transports:
marking Tulli/Tull/Customs and register number
In addition to the address label/Exprès label for the service in domestic transports:
 - customs slip (C1 or CN22) or customs declaration (CN 23)
 - possibly 1 document, commercial invoice, copy of the commercial invoice, waybill, packing list or customs declaration, indicating the value of the item with costs.
Letter not containing goods, postcard, ordered publication No attachments are needed ​ No attachments are needed ​

 

Please note

  • The country code for the Åland Islands is AX, the address must also contain the words ÅLAND or the ÅLAND ISLANDS.
  • Also remember to add on the item the sender's tax number and a copy of the commercial invoice in a plastic folder.

Electronic notice of arrival - Åland Post sends an electronic notice of arrival

  • Electronic notices of arrival (EDI e-NOA) have been technically prevented in items sent to the Åland Islands in Posti's systems.
  • Posti cannot send an electronic notice of arrival for items sent to the Åland islands, but this is done by Åland Post.
  • Åland Post receives comprehensive electronic information on items arriving from Posti and utilizes it in sending notices of arrival, where possible. The recipient can receive the notice of arrival as an SMS or a printed notice of arrival.

How to send items from the Åland Islands?

Customer returns from the Åland Islands

  • The customer can return a customer return item to the Finnish mainland if it has an agreement on customer returns with Posti.
  • Åland Post uses the same customer return contract list as the Posti outlets in Finland.

Reply mail items from the Åland Islands

  • Reply mail items envelopes returned from the Åland Islands must carry the same reply mail item envelope markings as on the Finnish mainland.

Sending parcels from the Åland Islands to Finland

  • When mailing items from the Åland Islands, the address label ID must begin with JJFI999922....
  • Customer returns (more information above) and companies that have a pickup delivery service in the Åland Islands are exceptions.
